Little Caps and Gowns
There was no such thing as a pre-school “Graduation Day” when I was a child, it was about the bunch of songs and dance routines we’d been rehearsing for months. Maybe I am growing old enough to appreciate the “Graduation Day “concept which is trending now and becoming a pre-or junior school marketing tool for attraction, making a good end of the serene education era is what I feel! Little children wearing mortarboards and rolled diploma for kinder class, it doesn’t go well with me. It might sound cute, look adorable but excessively premature. When those little straight-line scribbles evolve into circular scribbles, it is indeed a precious milestone, moving from kinder to school is a big deal. But when we note every step as a ceremony, the real ones become less special for the kid. Do they need to be constantly rewarded for things they will automatically do? By using the term “graduate “, aren’t we taking away something from the kids?
Accomplishment Certificates do hold value, but
let’s cut the word graduation bit out of that. It is incredibly cute for
parents to watch their child’s kindergarten class celebrate the end of the year
by performing a class play and showing off the collection of artwork that they
have accumulated throughout the year. But full-blow kindergarten graduation,
complete with pictures, caps, and gowns, seems to be slightly off-kilter I think
a peck on that little cheek for writing the name and for not eating glue and
crayons should be a reason for celebration. Let kids be kids. Let them
experience their own emotions without imposing our adult idiocy. Let them revel
in their simplicity for as long as possible This is entirely my own personal
take on the subject!!!
